I hunger on abusive reviews. If you find abusive reviews anywhere on the site (even if it's on your own submission), let me know and I'll flag it. I constantly check the portal and eat abusive reviews. Got review questions? PM me and I'll answer it fully.

Cleaning up NG Part 18: ALL of the BBS Rules (Part 1)

Posted by SuperMarioBrosS Jun. 14, 2009 @ 4:40 PM EDT

Again, in the BBS, you cannot get whistle points AT ALL. Therefore, the phrase 'and Whistle Points' was dropped.

Anyway, in this post, I will list ALL of the BBS rules in here. So if you are new and are reading this post, then you are lucky. Reading ALL of this post will ensure that you will know how to avoid being banned. To clean up the BBS, report violating posts to the forum mods.

~ Introduction ~
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

~ General Overview ~

These are the NG Forum rules. If you don't agree with them you can leave this section of Newgrounds or refuse to register an account. Upon breaking a rule you might receive a warning, but this is not mandatory. You can be banned for your first offense of breaking these rules.

NOTE: We often refer to our forums as the NG BBS. The term BBS is an acronym for "Bulletin Board System", which is the traditional name for what most people now refer to as "forums".

~ Why are there rules? ~

Newgrounds is the original and largest community of Flash artists on the planet. We work tirelessly to make NG the best site it can possibly be, only to occasionally have the mood brought down by users with bad attitudes. These rules are here to maintain order and keep users civil, so that when people visit Newgrounds they don't remember it as a rotting cesspool full of morons.

~ The Big Ones ~

If you break any of these rules, you are guaranteed to earn an instant ban regardless of which forum moderator sees the post:

- Using racist, sexist, homophobic or hateful language.

- Posting pornographic (including cartoon porn) or NSFW (Not Safe For Work) material. Exceptions include NG staff or if you're posting to the Art Forum and it's relevant rather than downright perverted.

- Linking to pornographic or NSFW material without a clear warning.

- Linking to viruses, referral sites, or maliciously coded websites either in your signature or in your post.

- Discussing illegal activities - including, but not limited to: ROMs, cracks, warez and hacking.

- Instigating or discussing malicious attacks on other websites

- Posting with an alternate account whilst banned or your main account while an alt is banned. Both accounts may be deleted.

- Posting any member's real life information without permission.

- Impersonating Administrators, Moderators, or Newgrounds regulars.

- Bumping any old topic without a good reason and new information.

- Making multiple short posts (five words or less) over a short time period.

- Attempting to smartass your way around these rules.

Only in VERY rare cases will a mod let you go free if you break these rules.

~ Other Rules ~

If you break any of these rules, you are risking yourself getting banned. Think before you post!

- Remaking or complaining about a locked or deleted thread by creating a new thread.

- Complaining or boasting about any ban, including comments in signature text.

- Backseat modding: pointing out what needs to be deleted, banned, locked or destroyed.

- Posting flashing or strobing images, or picture spamming: repeatedly posting the same picture or
posting irrelevant / overused images such as the FAIL picture.

- ALL CAPS posting.

- Chasing / harassing / flaming other users, regardless of who instigated it.

- Harassing other users by having a continuous negative or bitter attitude towards them.

- Insulting or harassing the moderators or administrators.

- Trolling: cruising the boards looking for a fight.

- Sniping or knocking established NG groups, such as the Clocks, Locks, IWP.

- Repeatedly advertising your website.

- Recreating a thread that has been created recently. Use the search bar before hitting "New Topic".

- Posting excessively in a language other than English for the sole purpose of excluding the majority of the users.

- Making "Hi, I'm new", "I'm back", or "I'm leaving NG" threads without significant content pertinent to your situation.

- Creating parody threads or posting with gimmick accounts.

- Making stats threads.

- Posting "Use the search", "Use Google" or similar messages without providing relevant links.

- Posting lame chat conversations. No one cares. Seriously.

- Attempting to smartass your way around these rules.

You MAY or MAY NOT be banned if you break these rules.

~

Now for the following, the GENERAL BBS rules STILL apply, but there are more rules added on here:

~ Starting a Collab ~

Qualifications to Start a Collab

1) You have at least at least a 3.5 Batting Average (a batting average is the average score of your top three submissions to Newgrounds, found easily by searching your user name in the header above and rolling over your author icon).

2) You have at least one solo submission that is currently scored 3.5 or higher on NG (meaning one submission you have done on your own, no collab or team).

3) You are actually motivated and responsible enough to handle maintaining several users and their work.

If you do not qualify for any of these reasons PM a moderator and they can give you special permission (if you can somehow convince them).

Things You MUST include In Your First Post
- The theme/style and requirements.
- The start and end date.
- Who can join.
- The version of Flash and Actionscript (if necessary) that you are working in.
- The FPS, Stage size, and other crucial details.
- How coauthors will be determined.
- If profiting, how you plan to split revenue, where money is coming from, and how people will be paid.

That said, there are additional ways to mess up and have your collab locked. Here is the run down:

Reasons Why Your Collab May be Locked
- If you start a collab for someone else that doesn't have the requirements to start one.
- If you forget about the collab or drop out yourself.
- If you tried running several collabs in the past and they all failed.
- If the thread derails into flame wars, fighting, or anything that really doesn't have to do with collabs.
- If you have to bump it constantly to keep it alive or a majority of the posts are yours.
- A similar collab is going on at the moment.
- Your collab is a "1 hour collab" or something similar in nature and you haven't given prior notice that you are running it... people need to be prepared to start a very short-term project and not have it fall to pieces.
- Any other issue a mod sees as unfit for starting a collab.

If you don't qualify to run a collab here, you can run it in a personal news post, over AIM, or elsewhere. The Newgrounds Portal itself has no real rules for collabs, but if you are going to run one here better make it good.

If you have a question, ask a forum mod.

~ Audio Forum Rules ~

~ Background Information ~

Newgrounds first opened the Audio Portal in 2003 and since then new artists sign up every day to submit loops - totalling several hundred submissions each week. Since there was no formal place for musicians to discuss their art, we opened the Audio Forum in April 2005.

This forum is a place where musicians from numerous different backgrounds can share their wisdom with other audio artists and users new to music. The emphasis is firmly on the creation of music rather than listening and appreciation. (Threads relating to your favorite song, band, or guitar solo will be deleted.) Other than that, we ask you to abide by the standard BBS Rules and remind you that discussion of software piracy in particular is forbidden on the NG forums.

Please also remember that the Audio Portal is also a great resource for NG's Flash artists. We love it when our audio artists create full-length songs, but don't forget that those killer 30-second loops are perfect for getting featured in Flash submissions.

Threads NOT to recreate:

~ Guidelines on Making & Joining Clubs and Crews ~

1) When making a club, stop and think. "Hmm, does the Newgrounds BBS really need a club like this? And, what are the chances that this club has already been made?"

In other words, NG doesn't need a "Butter Club" and we most likely already have a Final Fantasy Club, so there is basically no need to post any new threads in Clubs and Crews, whatsoever.

2) When posting in a club, ask yourself, "Could I say this on AIM or some other major IM system?" If you are saying, "Hi, how was everyone's day?" and your club is about Megaman, that isn't really pertaining to Megaman, and is basically the reason why these clubs are all 200 + pages. In other words, don't post in your club just for the sake of posting.

3) Don't post just to bump your club, unless you have something actually LEGITIMATE to say. Countless amounts of time we have users saying, "Oh my God guys, I can't believe our club is on the third page, BUMP!" That causes clubs that no one cares about to keep on the front page. If your club does not get posts in it, obviously no one is interested in it. It's simple logic, use it.

4) When you see a new club, that breaks one of the rules, don't post in it saying, "OGM YOU n00b, THERE ALREADY IS A CLUB FOR THIS!!" Simply ignore it, and allow it to sink to the bottom. If the user continues to bump it up, a moderator will deal with it. Posting in the club just keeps the club on the front page, exactly what you are trying to NOT allow happen. By posting in a club that is illegitimate, you are just annoying the moderator, and will most likely end up getting banned for it. If you really have a problem with it, and no one is dealing with it, email a moderator with your complaint. Give it a day or two before sending your email.

5) Flaming a club simply because it is more popular than your own club, is stupid and pointless, and should only be done in a limited amount. If you are posting in a club everyday to call everyone in it derogatory names, then you will be banned. On the contrary, if someone points out something in your club, and you complain about that person posting in your club, and it is an illegitimate complaint, the moderators will just take you less seriously. So don't become the whiney kid in class who bitches about every minor thing.

6) Posting a member list every five posts is pointless and a stupid way to bump up your thread, and should be avoided. Maximum times you are allowed to post a member list is once per page. This prevents spamming up your own thread.

7) Posting for the sake of raising your thread's replies, is against the rules. If you are posting the same thing over and over again, and you are spamming your thread with useless replies and constantly repeating yourself, your club will most likely be locked, or else you will be banned, depending on the severity of the problem.

8) Try to avoid joining every single club you see, just for the sake of putting them all in your signature. Being a devoted member of three or four clubs maximum will cause less quick, one word, unthoughtout replies, and therefore eliminate needless spam in Clubs. Most club owners who are actually serious hate it when someone joins eighty different clubs, because there isn't enough time to post in all of them anyway, so why bother?

9) If you are a club owner, you are not the omni-prescene of the thread, you do not have the final say in anything, the moderators of the BBS do. Some people think that they can have users banned from their thread, simply because they don't like what the user is saying. If you have a complain, contact a moderator, and we will look into it. Once you have emailed or contacted us, leave it at that. Don't create a giant flame war inside your thread, because that will just esclate the problem, especially if you are wrong about the person, which may end up with your thread being locked.

10) Above all else, use common sense when posting in Clubs and Crews. Yes, it is easy to get away with stuff in that section, but you shouldn't use it as a place to spam and raise your post count. This section was created for users to share interests in things that they both enjoy, and talk about them in a BBS setting. If you use your head, chances are you will avoid breaking all the rules set out.

~ Programming Guidelines ~

Note that hyphens represents bullets and the asterisk represents a subcategory of the above bullet.

While these are merely guidelines to posting in this forum, there is still a risk of being banned if you violate them. Seriously, think before you post.

- Topics should be clear and concise from the first post. Titles should be precise, describing what you are using and what's going wrong. You are only given 35 characters to make a good impression and to properly represent your thread so use that space wisely.

* Examples of good topic titles include "C Pointers - Causing Segmentation Fault," "PHP - Fatal Error on mysql_connect," "Dell Inspiron E1705 with Vista crashing," "Photoshop CS3 - Virtual Memory error," or "Ubuntu 7.10 - GRUB won't install."

* Conversely, bad titles include "my laptop keeps crashing!!!" and "why won't this thing work?"

- Keep posts on topic. There are many other areas of the NG Forums that cater to other types of discussion. The Programming Forum is for programming and, as such, should remain programming related.

- This is not - nor has it ever been - the place for ActionScript-related posts. Not only is that addressed in the forum description but also by common sense. Those most well equipped to answer a question about Adobe Flash are going to be users in the Flash Forum.

- Before asking questions related to any common topics (Javascript, Java, C++, PHP, etc.), use the search bar. Many questions have already been addressed. If there is not already a thread about your question, check Google. The Internet is big and chances are your problem has cropped up before and has been answered.

* If your question relates to one of the more common programming languages (PHP, C++, and Java, to be specific), look for PHP: Main, C++: Main, or Java: Main, respectively. The members of the Newgrounds community have already graciously compiled tutorials as well as lists of references to make learning these languages easier. If what you're looking for isn't there, continue your research before making a topic.

* If you only barely understand a topic please be careful when constructing a reply to it, and if possible check what you know as well. First, the chances that you can explain the subject better than the 300 million sites on the web are very small. Secondly, and most importantly, you will most likely misrepresent information if you barely understand it yourself, and fighting misinformation is one of the most difficult aspects of teaching others.

- If your research has returned nothing useful and you feel that you are prepared to ask your question in the Programming Forum, please provide information about your problem, the parameters (your hardware, OS, etc.), and describe any research you've done. If you can show you've given effort then others will give effort too.

- Posting job offers is encouraged and allowed, but remember to post all relevant information: language required/requested, FULL job description (this includes a list of things to accomplish, a list of things that are optional, and the timeframe expected), and the amount the job pays. This isn't a charity; asking for a piece of code or advice is one thing, expecting someone to write thousands of lines of code for you with no compensation is another.

* Please note that administrative status in a new forum/website, prospective ad revenue, and/or free space on a personal site are not job incentives, and will not work in lieu of physical currency. If you do not already have a price in mind do not offer the job anywhere in these forums.

* Do not ask for others to produce an application for you (game, or otherwise). If you would like to start a project you should be prepared to do a large portion of the work and show you understand it and are capable.

- Do not ask for specific code snippets. Questions which require specific code to solve should be supplemented with specific examples or attempts. This will show you're motivated and it will be more worthwhile to you if your learn how your code is wrong - not if you just know someone else's is right.

- Solutions for homework assignments will not be given. You can certainly ask for help with code you've written if it is for an assignment, but conning people into doing your homework isn't tolerable

There is a risk of being banned if you violate these rules. Think before you post.

- Maximum upload size is 200k, with a maximum width of 595 pixels and maximum height of 700 pixels.

- Post your art IN THE FORUM, do not simply link to another site for people to view your art. You are welcome to link to another site to view a hi-res version of your picture, but please link to it with a smaller version of the image that fits within our guidelines.

- If you are starting a new topic you MUST start with a piece of your own original art. If you are looking for advice, please share your work as an example of what you are trying to accomplish.

- Do not post requests such as "Photoshop this" or "Draw this" without giving your own example. You are allowed to create Photoshop threads but you must provide source art as well as a second post with your own submission. Please don't ask people to Photoshop your friends.

- Any art you post must be your own with the exception of images used to start a Photoshop thread, which may come from the public domain.

- If you want to draw something with ArtPad you may only post it here. If you want to contribute to other threads, please make the effort to upload an image.

- MS Paint drawings had better be funny and well thought out or else may be removed.

- Posting a large image containing a small piece of art in the center is considered an abuse of the forums and may be removed.

- Only use adult content in highly artistic or hilarious situations. We don't want this to be a hentai gallery.

- All criticism must be constructive. The art forum is intended to be a POSITIVE environment and negativity is not welcome here.

- Art posted in this forum is the property of the artist and may not be used in a Flash movie without the artist's consent.

- If your thread is intended to organize an Art Flash Collab, please make that intent clear in your initial post.

- If you decide to post a contest, you need to go through a mod first. Once a mod DOES look over your account (making sure it isn't some lame ALT), only then can you post your contest with the words [approved] in the thread title. You can still post a contest without our permission, but you must write [unofficial] in the title. If you don't, it gets deleted and you get banned.

Note that some of them moderate more than one section of the site. The information in parenthesis next to their name shows you the other sections of the site they moderate. If there is no parenthesis, then that means that those mods only moderate the BBS. Also note that if there is the word "demodded" in parenthesis next to the name, then that means that that mod has been demodded and is no longer a mod. The demodded user CAN still answer any BBS questions you have so their names and PM links have still been left here. Try PMing mods that are JUST BBS mods so that you can get a faster response to a question.

I want to be a mod. Just look at that screenshot! look at those red text buttons; and they say "[del | del pic]" They look so juicey! don't you just want to click them...

Jun. 17, 2009 | 10:07 AM SuperMarioBrosS responds:

Haha, I was afraid someone may say something like that.

Yes, I would want to click them (only if the post is abusive).

If you want to be a mod, be active on the BBS often, report A LOT (like probably 1,000 PMs) of abuse, don't get banned often, don't be an asshole (be a model poster) and don't ask to be a mod. Be patient too. When the time comes, you may become a mod. It's still not a guarantee that you will get your modship though.

I believe there is also a [del sig] and a [del pic] button at the bottom of each person's BBS signature. For the thread itself, there probably is a [del], [lock] or [destroy] option next to the 'New topic' and 'Post reply' buttons. 8 buttons in total.
